Weekend Wrap-Up

Screen Shot 2014-09-29 at 9.21.37 AM
Captured this brief period of excitement getting my picture taken (finally) with Roc the Panther!

To be honest, I could have done without this weekend. This one of those few weekends that just all together was not very good. I should have seen this coming when we went over to our friends’ apartment Friday night for a little get-together and it was actually pretty lame. I don’t know about you, but I feel that when I’m at what you’re selling as a party “I could totally be finishing up my paper rather than sit here and watch guys watch tv. Is this really what I dressed up for?” should not be part of my inner monologue. Fast forward to Saturday afternoon at Heinz Field for the Pitt v. Akron game. Going into this game I understood that we pretty much were guaranteed the win. Apparently our team felt that meant they could totally slack off and completely forget the basics of the game. It wasn’t a good sign when the first quarter ended and there was still no score. When I left half way through the third quarter (group projects ruin things, right?) the score was 10-14 Akron. Plenty of room for a comeback though. Buzzer sound. Oh how wrong! From what I understand we did the impossible and just got worse as the game wrapped up. In a nutshell, the Pitt Panthers lost to the Akron Zips 10-21. That just feels wrong and upsetting to say.

This feeling of disappointment segued into feelings of stress and periodic panic as I spent Saturday night and all of Sunday wrapping up my paper, finishing up this group presentation, reading 50+ pages for the same class I am delivering this presentation in and editing the pieces of my PR writing project ALL DUE TODAY!

I blame the football team for my lack of a good time this weekend.

Hopefully you had a better weekend than I did!

Coffee Talk

IMG_0310.JPG

I’m not usually one to write about any strong, controversial opinions and topics on the blog. However, recently feminism has earned a big spot in the news in both the good and bad and I have to put my two cents in. Earlier in the week I watched Emma Watson’s incredible speech at the UN discussing the HeForShe campaign which encourages men and boys to join in the movement for gender equality. I loved every part of her speech; she said all of the right things (my opinion, of course!) Countless times did the voice in my head exclaim “Preach!” within that 12 minutes. That’s the good part of this.

Now for the bad. Of course I understand every movement has its critics, but never did I expect the gross reaction of the group responsible for the recent nude photo leak involving several other female celebrities. The group has threatened to release photos of Emma now, condemning her views and passion for seeing women receive equal treatment. Even more disturbing to me is the multitude of supportive comments that the group received.

It is sometimes shocking to me that there are people out there who honestly believe that women should be silent and should not put themselves out there to be successful. This opinion to me seems so antiquated! I have been so blessed to have men in my life who are so supportive and encouraging of my dreams and want to see me be successful. It is sometimes difficult for me to understand that this is not the case for everyone. For every woman out there who feels as empowered as I, there are still countless who feel oppressed. I cannot see the reasoning behind this inequality either; what makes women lesser to men? Last time I checked, women are people. We are citizens of this world right alongside men. We can think. We can provide. We can care for ourselves and others. We are capable.

I take this group’s threat against Emma as a threat against myself as well. But bravery will help to overcome it. I want her and this movement to succeed more than anything.

I know this is probably the most opinionated post I have written but I had to share my thoughts; I feel very passionately about it. What are your thoughts? Respectful discussion is welcomed.

A Few Of My Favorite Things

fallfaves

In case you didn’t hear, fall has officially started! Pumpkin spice everything has been rolled out and I have already seen flannels, sweaters, skinnies and boots walking down the street. As much as I like to stray from the crowd, I must say that like every other girl out there I am a sucker for fall weather. What’s not to love about the changing leaves, cooler mornings and evenings, and the soul warming beverages that are available? Above are just a few of my favorite fall things.

1 // There is nothing more cozy than having your morning cup warm in bed looking out at the leaves. Can I be anymore cliche? Answer: I can and I will.

2 // Style wise I always love deeper colors (think reds, blues and oranges) and this year I am really in to leather jackets.

3 // Along with deep colors in my fall clothes, I look to the darker end of the spectrum in my make-up as well. Deep lipsticks and nail polishes take up my make-up table these days/

4 // Just hanging out with all the leaves. I love taking walks/runs in the park in the afternoon when I am done with classes. It’s not so hot that it is unbearable, but it is not freezing either.

Have a great weekend!

Here’s Looking At You, Spring

As promised, I have compiled a little piece about some of my favorite trends from this year’s NYFW. I am very enthusiastic about some of the trends we will be seeing come spring/summer 2015.

Gingham: I really didn’t think I would like this as much as I did. When I read that gingham popped up on a few runways I just saw models wrapped in picnic blankets in my mind–that’s just my mind for ya! As long as they steer clear of the red pattern I think it’s actually a pretty cool look! I personally would wear it in small doses though; like in a skirt like this Ralph Lauren look.

Kimonos: I have already developed a kind of love affair with kimonos. I mean, I don’t have any so it’s more like a love from afar. I love how light and casual they can be but can also transition into something a little nicer. The kimono style also works as a dress as seen on the 3.1 Phillip Lim runway.

Navy: I am a big fan of solid pieces most of the time. Only once in awhile will you see me sporting a print. All black, all white, I’m there! One trend that popped up this NYFW was all navy. Solid darks are always very elegant in my opinion so I am very much on board with this trend! Just look at this piece from Proenza Schouler.

Vests: Honestly I haven’t worn anything considered a vest since my private school sweater vest days. Excuse me while I shudder and have those flashbacks. Anyhoo, I love what I have seen of this trend. Nothing of the sweater family. The length that many of them tend toward also intrigues me–they are fairly long, like this one from the Tome show.

Weekend Wrap-Up

Happy Monday, everyone! If you have noticed, I took a little break last week to get through the overload that is my schoolwork. Dear junior year, freaking chill! But I am back. I have definitely lost track of all the NYFW updates I was planning on giving you this past week. However, I have gone the Plan B route–tomorrow I will be posting a summary of what big trends were seen on the S/S 2015 runways!

Not only has schoolwork taking up a LARGE portion of my time, but we have also been planning a birthday party for two of my roommates that went off without a hitch this past weekend. Ready for the theme? A throwback to the sleepovers of our youth. We decorated with streamers, balloons, banners and even made goodie bags for our guests (complete with gel pens, glow in the dark rings, Ring Pops and Fruit Roll-Ups.) One of my big contributions to this shindig was the nostalgic (read: FREAKING AMAZING) playlist made up of nine hours worth of songs from the ’90s and early 2000s. There was plenty of Spice Girls and Daughtry for everybody.

On Sunday morning we ventured down to South Side and took brunch at Waffles Incaffeinated. OH. MY. GOD. It was probably the most filling and delicious brunch I have ever had. To start, the coffee was great and I should know; I’m kind of a morning coffee connoisseur. Ordering the food was probably the most difficult. There were so many waffles and omelets to choose from.  I ended up with the Funky Monkey waffle loaded with chocolate, peanut butter and bananas. I also made sure to order a side of the home fries per the suggestion of one of my friends. Dear Lord it was incredible! There was plenty of sharing going around at our table. If you are ever in the Pittsburgh area please do yourself the favor of dining at Waffles. The wait can be long though so try to call ahead!

What fun did your weekend hold?

An Update

Yeah I know…I’ve been quiet. I did have this big, fun plan to post every single day–my editorial calendar actually had a post for every single weekday! Then I got busy. September is a big birthday month in my friend group–though I don’t think October will be much better–so this past weekend we celebrated one of my roommates birthdays and this weekend we are throwing a joint party for her and one of my other roommates whose birthday is the 25th. Jeez, right?! With the busy weekends also comes schoolwork overload. I’m pretty sure my professors have gotten together and agreed to assign me everything at once. Thanks, guys! I also started my campus job yesterday…so there’s that.

I am recalibrating my blog plan now though! I wanted to post every evening during NYFW and give you updates about what designers showed that day but that plan is pretty dead. I think what I will do is finish out this impromptu break I’m taking, wait until NYFW is over and give you a post of trends that showed through the whole week. Good plan? Good.

How do you keep sane when there is so much to do?

Welcome Back, Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week kicked off this morning and today’s shows displayed trends early on. Romantic silhouettes and pastel colors graced several of the runways.

Tadashi Shoji sums up his collection in just one word, “Venice.” The collection consisted of flowing gowns, capes, lace, gold, and deep blues. I have not seen pictures of all of the looks yet, but I absolutely love this one–it’s the gold, it always gets me!

Another favorite today was the BCBGMAXAZRIA show. Pastels were prominent throughout, which is always a favorite of mine. Can’t go wrong with baby blues and pinks! Florals also made an appearance in the collection–florals are pegged to be a big trend into this fall!
